What is Soymilk?

Delicious, convenient and incredibly good for you, soy milk may well become your favorite drink. Made from soy beans (no cows involved), soy milk is often used in place of dairy milk as a refreshing drink, over breakfast cereal and in coffee. For cooking, soy milk lends a boost of creamy great taste and extra nutrition to baked goods, casseroles and more. Plus, soy milk is the secret ingredient in the world’s greatest smoothies!
Soy milk has long been a popular choice for people who are lactose intolerant or prefer to avoid animal products. But ever since Silk brought the creamy pleasure of soy milk to the mainstream, everybody’s riding the wave. After all, you don’t need a special reason to indulge in great taste.
Soy milk is loaded with vitamins and minerals your body needs to maintain peak health. It also provides special nutrients called isoflavones that scientists believe may help reduce the risk of certain cancers and provide other important health benefits.

The FDA says that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein per day may reduce the risk of heart disease.

What kind of protein is found in soy milk?
Protein from soy beans is a complete source of protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Twenty amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used by the human body and all 20 are necessary for health. The body itself can make 11 of these amino acids, while the other nine must come from the diet.

What is casein?
Casein is a milk protein. We do not use casein as an ingredient in Silk products.

What is L. casei? Is it dairy free?
Lactobacillus is a bacteria found in humans. Lactobacillus is more effective than many other bacteria in surviving the passage through the gastrointestinal tract and helps to balance the intestinal microflora. Lactobacillus has been proven to resist and fight potential pathogens such as E.coli, streptococci, clostridia and salmonella.

L. casei strains of the Lactobacillus species are found naturally in fermented vegetables, milk and meat, as well as in the intestine, the human mouth and the environment.

What are isoflavones? Are they good for me?
Isoflavone is the general term for phytoestrogen, a plant chemical found in soybeans. Some researchers believe that isoflavones are good for your health. Currently the federal government has no standard for the recommended daily allowance of isoflavones.

we believe that the isoflavones found in normal servings of soy foods, consumed throughout the day, can be part of a healthy diet. We do not believe in supplementing the diet with isolated isoflavone supplements.

Each 8 oz. serving of Soymilk contains approximately 20 to 35 milligrams of isoflavones. The amount of isoflavones in soy beans varies from year to year depending on seed and soil quality, weather and other variables that affect each harvest.

What does organic mean?
Regulations state that foods labeled "organic" cannot be grown with the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical fertilizers. Organic food products must not be produced with the use of biotechnology.

Plus, all certified organic products must maintain a strict audit trail that allows a product to be traced all the way back to the field in which it was grown. Most Silk products are made with certified organic soybeans. Read more about other ways that Soymilk is helping our environment.

What are soy beans?
The soy bean comes from a leguminous plant (Glycine max) that grows pods with clusters of two to three beans. The color of the bean varies from shades of brown to green and the shape can be oval or round. People began cultivating soy beans in Northern China three centuries ago. Today soy beans are used in many food products, including soy milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt and tofu.
